Be Smart About Your Wisdom Teeth

The removal of wisdom teeth is a common procedure. The most frequent indication for removal is inadequate space and malposition (e.g. an impacted tooth).

The vast majority of patients elect to have their wisdom teeth removed under Intravenous Sedation (IV Sedation). This method of anesthesia is extremely safe and helps the patient through the procedure by allowing them to sleep during the surgery.

The ideal age for removal of wisdom teeth is between 15 and 20 years of age, depending on the degree of root development. Removing the wisdom teeth prior to complete development of the root lessens the risks and makes the procedure easier on the patient. The best time to remove the wisdom tooth is when the root is 30 to 50 percent developed.
